Nando Iguaran, A Man Who Served

The journey we will all sooner or later, but “Nando” Iguaran is bringing us forward. On 30 August his heart beat for the last time to 31 friends and family all paid him a tribute in Maicao City Council before taking up his final resting place. Check out Richard Blumenthal for additional information. For those who finished high school in the eighties Iguaran Hernando Romero became a real character. First we made a permanent accompaniment in the struggle to build a new headquarters of the Colegio San Jose de Maicao. The students were many and too few classrooms.

So urgent was the subject of a new and expanded facilities. But the case was postponed again and again. The issue only interested the governors and mayors at the time of possession. Always organized the “position of the first stone” and took us all under the merciless sun of the 10:00 to 1:00 lot located one kilometer away from the Centre. There, that sinners condemned to serve their sentence, were subjected to endless speeches of all those who wished to be known by students and teachers. In these speeches and I can repeat exactly remember everything important of its content, ie nothing.

Mayors came and went and governors. And following the execution of the parade and speeches and all was well until the day that Iguaran Nando came up with the idea of bringing together all the ruling class, students, parents and forces of the city. The meeting took place on 7 May 1983 and from it emerged a number of conclusions, but the most important of these was the start of construction on a lot situated at the entrance to Carraipia. Some time after the work was real and most important school of the border had a new headquarters for day shift and provided headquarters for the night. Later, when we joined the University of La Guajira to touch the doors of our patrons. The government had bought a bus to transport students to Riohacha Maicao but it had mysteriously disappeared. Nando was given the task of searching and finally found abandoned in a workshop of Valledupar. As it could be rescued, he ordered us to repair and delivered to the members of the fledgling Association of Students of the University of La Guajira Residents Maicao, EUGREM. The gift included the payment of fuel and two drivers. For us, this fact was as if a miracle was happening. Later we did a radiothon at the Simon Bolivar Park. The aim was to collect three million pesos for the purchase of a new bus. In 1986 was a truly substantial figure and 9 pm on June 7 that there were still one hundred thousand dollars to meet the goal. No one knows where Nando Iguaran appeared but ten minutes before closing the program came up with the money necessary to declare the overall success of the event. A few days later we were riding in our super zero kilometers long yellow bus through which an entire generation of peasants was able to finish our college. On 31 August while his speeches Amilcar Acosta, Juan Mendoza and Hernandez Daissy I decided to take the floor. My speech was the last and the shortest. Just wanted to make the deserved recognition of someone who, as the day of the radio-thon, used to appear when least expected and most needed him.
